I want to start by acknowledging the privilege of being recognized in this moment. Despite my career possibly ending sooner than expected, every second was worth treasuring. My time on the court was a dream come true, and tonight, your recognition makes it even more special.
I'm immensely grateful to my mentors and sponsors who have played a pivotal role in my journey. Bill Russell, I recall our first interaction when you invited me to dinner at your Seattle home as a young rookie. Your guidance and advice really boosted my confidence in a new country. Bill Walton, your support has been invaluable. Thank you for your encouragement and words of wisdom when I underwent foot surgery. Dikembe Mutombo, our bond is unbreakable despite those playful elbows you always give me during practice.
As I delve into my personal journey, I want to acknowledge my roots in China. My parents were basketball players in the 1970s, and their stories inspire me. Their legacy is not just about their skills on the court but their character as people. I am blessed to be their son and have inherited more than just my height from them—I've inherited their wisdom and values.
My wife Li has been my rock throughout our journey together. She's not just my partner in life but a significant part of my success on the court. Our daughter Amy is a treasure we wish could be here tonight, though she's starting her first week at school and making her own way in the world.
The journey to basketball began with coach Li Zhangmin's bicycle ride to my first practice session. I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to him on his retirement this year—many kids have been blessed by his guidance and dedication. Coach Li Qiuping, who led me to the CBA championship, has left an indelible mark on my career and life. His unwavering support even during personal hardships is truly admirable.
I also want to thank the city of Shanghai, the Shanghai Sharks, and the CBA league for their unwavering support during my rise in basketball. Their dedication to my development has raised me to new heights and prepared me for the challenges of life ahead.
In Chinese culture, mirrors reflect not just appearance but character and truth. In my life, there are several mirrors that have reflected my weaknesses and strengths back to me—among them is Mr. Mou Zouyun, who dedicated his life to Chinese basketball and inspired countless players like me who dream of reaching the NBA. I am also grateful to Wang Zhi Zhi for paving the way for all future Chinese players who aspire to make it big in the NBA.
Many know my story with the Rockets after they drafted me in 2002, but few know about the effort put in by the Rockets before and throughout my career. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Les Alexander, Michael Goldberg, Carroll Dawson, Tad Brown, Daryl Morey, and Keith Jones for making me feel at home in Houston from the first day I arrived there. The warm welcome I received from Steve Francis and Cutino Mobley made me feel right at home on that early Rockets team.
Lastly, Rudy T., known for his iconic quote "Never underestimate the heart of a champion," has been an inspiration both on and off the court, especially in his personal battle with cancer. Rudy, you have always been a source of inspiration for me to strive for excellence in everything I do. Tonight, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who have played a role in my journey so far—your support has been invaluable.
